Kal was having follow up xrays a couple weeks ago and we got horrible news.

Kal is a structural disaster. She has luxating patellas in both knees and has hip dysplasia in one hip. Because of her hip, she is already losing muscle mass and is requiring surgical correction.

Needless to say, Kal's working career has been ended before it really started. Due to her health issues she is not going to be able to compete in anything high impact, weight pull and agility are definitely out. We are looking into doing more obedience type competitions and will still give Dock Dogs a try but everything else is out to preserve her joints.

Game men always said, they never needed to health test their stock because as long as it could walk in and out of the ring it was healthy. Well, I think Kal proves that yet again, they are full of shit.

Kalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02816788025624210408noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7192882668578513069.post-17961037238692379352010-07-14T10:27:00.001-07:002010-07-15T17:09:36.908-07:00Has it really been a year ?!?!Just last week we celebrated our 1 year anniversary of the impoundment of the MO500. Many emotions have been felt this week and all of them are as raw as they were 365 days ago. Many tears have been shed, many smiles have been cracked and in the end a great collaboration of the rescue world has been celebrated.
We took time to mourn those that are not with us, and look to the future of those that are living the life of luxury. Many have gone on to new families, new lives, but many are still waiting for that special family to come along.

These dogs have taught us so much about every aspect of life that we owe them as much as they owe us. Kal teaches me something new every day, usually having to deal with being patient as she is one wild child. More importantly they taught us how to trust again, how to love and that mankind can try their damnedest to break a spirit but the heart of the Pit Bull usually prevails.

HSMO hosted a reunion this past weekend celebrating the lives of the MO500. Below is a picture of Kal, tackling one of her rescuers to shower her with kisses. Kal thanks the people of HSMO for their hard work and for allowing her the opportunity to become the dog she is today.

Kalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02816788025624210408noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7192882668578513069.post-77055399689118618002010-05-20T18:26:00.001-07:002010-05-20T18:26:37.394-07:00Tribute to MO500 at OneTrueMedia.comHere is the montage put together to honor Kal and the other 499 dogs of the MO500. Since spring is upon us, Broken Hearts Mended Souls has been out in full force at area pet expos, events and fairs. We have been educating the public on the breed and the importance of spay and neuter. Kal has been a great part of this but has not quite made ambassadog status. We are definitely getting there but she is WAY too excited to meet anyone and everyone that we are still working on manners. What else would you expect from a 11month old pup ? So to tide everyone over, Kal thought it was important for everyone to see how she has grown into a 'big girl' now. She is starting to fill out and has become the gorgeous dog she has been meant to be. More to come abut her activities and just wait until we can get some weight pull pictures up! Yes, my 37lbs little monster is starting to suit up!

Kalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02816788025624210408noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7192882668578513069.post-59111765999130030572010-03-18T06:49:00.000-07:002010-03-18T07:03:17.001-07:00Someone Got a Care Package !
So the other day a big box arrived to the Erickson household with precious cargo for the bully babies here. It is a huge event, with people everywhere inside the dome that can be very loud.

Kal walked into the dome like she owned the place. Every trip onto the dock her confidence grew, but we did not get an official jump. Indoor events are very hard even for the most veteren jumper. Kal has been friends to them all but the relationship she has with the current stow away is something I am proud of.

Kali has definitely had her ups and downs here; house breaking, separation anxiety, basic house manners etc. With Bug being here I have begun to realize how far our little girl has really come.

Bug has been going through our 2 week shut down since being here. She has been allowed to go at her own pace, hang out in her room and not forced to do anything she didn't feel ready for. Bug is still quite shell shocked from her experiences but has a real want to be part of the family here.

Ever since Bug has come here she has had a real interest in Kali. Their crates share the 'bust dog' room and every time one of them is out they are play bowing and carrying on. Never a snark, never a stink eye, just a genuine want to play. Because of both their back grounds and because we were only days into Bug's stay with us we haven't allowed interaction.

Bug has been here for two weeks now and we thought it was about time to go ahead and allow these girls to have some fun. It was instant zoomies, instant kissy face, instant friends. All of this was obviously closely monitored and will continue to be so.

Since the play time Bug has found it is ok to venture into other parts of the house, has learned to jump on the couch and has learned that it is just OK to be a dog. This whole time I had it all wrong with having Bean show her the ropes, what Bug actually needed was Kal. Another dog from the fighting bust situation just being a dog.

Who would have thought Kal would be a role model !Kalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02816788025624210408noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7192882668578513069.post-14972705017419062672010-01-07T09:55:00.000-08:002010-01-07T09:59:59.895-08:00Fabulous news.........Kal's sister was transferred to Family Dogs New Life Shelter in Portland Oregon a couple months ago. She is beginning to see that being alone is an ok thing, if Hav can do it, Kal can !

Kal was having some regression with her progress because her room mate Suzi left for her new foster home in MA (Braveheart Rescue) last Thur. I also have to admit to missing Suzi Q's companionship.

For the most part Kali and Havoc have been playing appropriately. At times play gets too vocal and rough for my liking so we all have time outs for a minute or two to let things cool off. Hav is learning when to quit, Kali is learning what is an appropriate correction, it has been a win win situation for all. It has been great having Hav here for the past few days as I have one tired puppy every night after a romp a room session. What we have begun to realize is that both these pups have some spunk and just a touch of fire. We will be socializing them continuously and making sure we can continue to work towards dock dogs, agility and WP titles. Big plans I know but you always have to want the best for your babies.

Kalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02816788025624210408noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7192882668578513069.post-62657846273850157812009-12-08T18:14:00.000-08:002009-12-08T18:32:36.772-08:00Dont Take the Kisses.........

Kali has a nasty nasty habit that she picked up at the shelter, she eats poop, nasty nasty poop. We have been trying everything we can to break the habit but she just cant get enough. Because of being in a crate for 3 months before being released, housebreaking has been very trying. We have been crate training, but for a puppy that had to relieve themselves in a crate for so long, she doesnt quite get the process, that with the fabulous habit of poop eating..........disaster.

We are giving lots of supplements to deter this less then flattering habit, so hopefully something works soon. Puppies sometimes do not do well in a crate and rotate situation but Kali was pretty much use to it from the lifestyle at the temp rescue shelter. As the weeks went on and Miss Kal got use to the idea of getting attention, she wanted more and more and more.

First it started with her not being able to stay gated in an area of the house as she could jump the 4ft baby gates. If only I could explain to her at the time that it was for her safety that she didnt jump that gate to get to me or play with the other dog, they didnt want to play. I have to be honest in admitting that for a moment I was pleased with her jumping of the gate........it had Dock Dog potential all over it ! But then the realization of the anxiety came as time went on.

As the weeks have gone on the separation anxiety has been ramping up. She can be loured into the crate with treats, so her crate aversion is not too bad, but once in and the door is closed, it sounds like a hyena has been let loose in my house. The vocalizations do not last long but the digging and biting at the bars do.

She is in a room with a DAP diffuser, spray and is wearing a DAP collar to hopefully take the edge off. In the first few weeks when this started to show itself, there was only a little drool in the crate, now we come home to a drenched pup. Kal also is urinating in the crate as well due to her stress. I am pretty sure that this is not just an housebreaking issue as she can hold it just as long while at work with me in a dog run.

We have had our fair share of separation anxiety in this house; Bean eating through walls, breaking out windows, eating out of every crate we put him in etc etc but I have never seen a puppy with this much anxiety of being left alone. Back to the desensitisation of leaving in this household.
When she is out and about, no fear, perfectly sound puppy with a touch of excited urination when new people come over, but once she is out of my sight, she panics. I am attributing it to her lack of true socialization while being held by the courts. She was handled at least once a day as much as she could be by the staff and volunteers but Kal was 1 of 500, and that is the reality of it. Obviously she is one that I took a special interest in and I helped shape her as best I could but she spent her best puppy time in the shelter, sometimes with litter mates, sometimes not.

Our exercise routine has been bumped up, she is able to come to work with me every day until some of this has resolved and she is getting as much attention as we can give without babying her into thinking there is something to be anxious about. We are putting in the work, just waiting for the results.

We are working through this and I dont doubt it will be successful, I just wish I could let the little girl know, she is safe and going to always get the attention she needs and deserves.Kalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02816788025624210408noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7192882668578513069.post-91986095678234576412009-12-03T17:14:00.000-08:002009-12-08T18:13:29.606-08:00Summary of the past 2 months

The past two months have been a whirlwind. The long awaited moment of 'Olivia' now Kali's release finally came on Oct 9th. She had been waiting for 3 long months to be able to leave the temporary HSMO shelter and be allowed to be a puppy. I had watched Kali grow and mature since the third week in July; figuring out pack behavior with her litter mates, dealing with the stress of the kennel environment but she stayed calm and solid throughout her whole stay at HSMO. The best day of this whole experience was when I got word her district had been released by the courts.........it was finally over for Kali.

We knew taking her in, we were going to have our setbacks but what we had was one amazing puppy that deserved a chance.

The first few weeks were all about exploring. She had never seen a house, never seen a ceiling fan and most definitely never been in a car. She was allowed to go at her own pace and has come so far. Once Kal has experienced something once, her fear is gone, full speed ahead. You have gotta love that about gamebred pups.

Throughout the two months of allowing her to just be her, she has been slowly introduced to our pack. We went through the 2 week shut down and because of that I feel her transition went as smooth as possible. We took it slow and over the past 2 months she has met all of our dogs. She does not interact with them all, but the foundation has been set for harmonious living. Her new best friend is Bozley, whom is my difficult male in my house. For some reason they have hit it off like two peas in a pod but I can see that things may not stay so hunky dory all the time. Kal is a pushy broad and doesnt let TBoz get away with much, which is quite an accomplishment at 7 months.

Kal has been in training classes for the past month and going at our own speed. She is a bright one, but I always have to remember she is not totally confident with herself yet. Once she hits a snag during class she shuts down. NO corrections can be used with her as she is one of the most sensitive puppies I have ever worked with. A trainer where we are were in class actually didnt see eye to eye with me on some training methods and we are no longer going to class. My top priority is Kal's success, if that means training goes a little slower because I am using strictly positive methods..........so be it. The bond will at least be there.

Kali is a retrieving machine. Her retrieve was actually the first thing we learn along with her 'out'. I have high hopes for this 28lb girl, she is hopefully going to excel at anything I put in her way. Her first Dock Dogs event is in Feb and she visited her first agility show this last weekend.

Oh the places she will go !

Kalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02816788025624210408noreply@blogger.com1
